Variation/Detail types: basic concepts

Definition

Variation and Detail types classify the variation accounts and detail accounts, and also identify the type of variation in the variation accounts.

Var. - Det. types

Type Description
Variation This shows the variations over time for a normal account (e.g. initial balance, investments, etc.)
Detail This shows a detail of a normal account (e.g. revenue breakdown by geographic area, product type, etc.)

The role of variation/detail types

The variation/detail types have the following roles:

  • They simplify the set-up of the chart of accounts and the control groups. In fact, they allow for control groups to be automatically generated and updated; the control groups link a normal account with the variation accounts or detail accounts generated by the variation/detail types.
  • They create data entry forms in a simple way and allow for reports to be generated based on the control group structure.

Var. - Det. types grouping

Variation/detail types can also be grouped together. For example, it is possible to create a node that groups the variation/detail types representing a variation of the financial investment variation accounts and another that groups those of the equity variations. These nodes are useful for a number of purposes:

  • to generate reports including or excluding the nodes
  • to select several variation/detail types included in the same grouping
