Advanced selection: scenario and period parameters

Using parameters in the Matrix Wizard

In CCH Tagetik, parameters can be used as row/column filters and matrix filters to create dynamic matrices.

In the dimensions tree, parameters are shown in blue and, once inserted as filters, their properties can be configured (see Table of row/column filter properties and Matrix filter properties table).

For scenario and period parameters, the properties table can be used to manage additional properties for navigating between the possible values of the parameter.

Note: Dimensional parameters on the period that allow OR clauses are not shown in the dimensions tree for defining form, tab and matrix filters, because they are not supported.

Parameters on the scenario dimension allow you to create dynamic forms for comparing data saved on different scenarios. In particular, the Parameter Navigation property (see Navigation) can be used to create rows/columns between the scenarios of which there exist temporal and comparison logics.

Details and potential uses of the logics according to which navigation can be designed are provided below.

Logic type Example
Temporal Uses the temporal relationships defined in the References section of the scenarios table (see Scenarios list). For example, in the presence of the 2012ACTUAL scenario, which collects actual data for 2012, it is possible to create a Previous-type relationship with scenario 2011ACTUAL, and a Following-type relationship with scenario 2013ACTUAL. Chains of scenarios can be crated in relation to the scenario before the previous scenario or even previous/following scenarios in relation to scenarios set as References #1-5. For more details, see Table of row/column filter properties and Matrix filter properties table.
Comparison Uses the relationships defined in the References section of the scenarios table (see Scenarios list), to compare data in forms. The user can indicate up to five Reference scenarios numbered from 1 to 5.

The order in which the elements are added to the Navigation list is very important because the system navigates the scenarios in the order in which they are added.

Parameters on the period dimension allow you to see, on the rows/columns, periods calculated on the basis of an offset from the run period. For example, it is possible to define columns that show data for 6 months prior to the reference period.

Example

Choose period 12 if you want to show data for period 6

To do this, set:

  • a row/column for the reference period parameter
  • a row/column for the period parameter with the Period Difference property set with the desired offset (-6).

If the user runs the same report for period 11, the system will show period 5 for comparison, and so on.

If the difference is greater than the number of periods in the run scenario, the system obtains the excess periods from the scenario set as the previous or following (depending on whether you are going forwards or backwards).

Note: in Data Entry mode, the period navigation feature is not fully supported for matrices with Analytical Workspace data. The system does not calculate the value of the scenario dimension correctly if, due to a difference greater than the number of periods present in the run scenario, it is necessary to use the scenario set as the previous or following. This is the case in relation to the editability of multidimensional matrices, transactional matrices and data extracted from transactional matrices.
