Ad-hoc analysis

Ad-hoc analysis is a functionality that allows the user to independently extract any numeric data present in the financial model of a CCH Tagetik application, and to analyze it via pivot table, directly from the web interface, or to download it as a local MS Excel file.

The Ad-hoc analysis functionality can be run:

  • from the System report tile in the User home page;
  • from the Process report menu in the Actions panel of the Detail summary tab of a process cockpit;
  • from a web form, by using the Analysis menu

In the first two cases, it is possible to define a bookmark to the Ad-hoc Analysis window, which can be used to create a Bookmark type tile on the user's Home page. By accessing from the created tile, the user can run an ad-hoc analysis with a series of pre-defined filters.

NOTE In the third case, if you define a bookmark when you are on an Ad-hoc Analysis window run from a web form, the bookmark will open the source web form and not the Ad-hoc analysis.

Filters window

When opening the Ad-hoc analysis (except when it is run from the Analysis > By cell or Analysis > By cube menu of the web form), the user must specify the set of data for the purposes of the analysis.

The Ad-hoc Analysis filter window includes a series of rows, one for each Hierarchy or Grouping to be displayed or filtered.

In the case of the Account dimension, in addition to hierarchies, you can use the Control Group, the Financial statement templates or the Forms to specify which accounts you want to display or filter.

In each row, the user must define the following fields:

  • Dimensions in this field you select the Dimension and the Hierarchy (Control Group, Financial statement template or Form) which is of interest for the analysis;
  • Filters in this field you can select the elements you want to include in the analysis;
  • Detail if this option is enabled, all the selected elements, limited to those for which there is data in the system, will be reported as an analysis dimension, up to the last level of detail. If the option is disabled, data will still be filtered on the selected elements only, and will be added up without having the split for each element of lowest level;
  • Display mode allows you to indicate whether the elements, if the Detail option is enabled, must be represented with the code only, the description only, or with code and description.

When the user opens the Ad-hoc analysis window from a process cockpit, the filters for the Scenario, Period and Entities dimensions are predefined with those selected in the cockpit.

The Next button closes the filters window and runs the ad-hoc analysis, by displaying on the pivot table the selected data, based on the set up dimensions and options.

The Download button does not close the filters window and extracts an .xlsx file that is downloaded locally with the selected data, based on the set up dimensions and options.

The extracted .xlsx file contains two sheets: The data sheet, in which all the records representing the selected data are shown in tabular form. The pivot table sheet, in which the data sheet's data is represented by a pivot table which is pre-set by the system.

In the data sheet, in addition to the column with the amount, there are one or two columns for each level of each dimension present in the filters window having the Detail option enabled.

For each level there will be a column for the code or for the description of the elements, or two columns, one for the code and one for the description, depending on how the Display Mode field is set up. The name of the column is given by the name of the level - if set up in the data model - namely by a technical name provided by the system. If there are two columns, one for the code and one for the description, then the two columns will show "(Code)" or "(Description)" at the end of the name.

The order of the columns is set up automatically by the system and the user cannot modify it without first opening the file in Excel.

NOTE if the user runs the Ad-hoc analysis utility from the Analysis > By cell or Analysis > By cube menu of a web form, the initial window for the selection of the dimensions and of the filters for the data to analyze is not available, and the system opens directly the pivot table on the web interface; this is pre-filtered with the filters that operate respectively on the cell selected in the initial web form, or on the matrix of the selected cell.
