Apply a Top-Down Override to a Group of Records

In top-down forecasting, the historical data of a group of records is aggregated and allocated as the historical data of a new, top-level forecast. This new forecast is applied as an override to the forecasts of the record group. As a result, the override normalizes the record group forecasts according to their sum total.

Once the top-down override is applied to the group of records, their forecasts are affected in the following ways:

Top-Down Override Affects

Forecast Affect Description
Re-evaluated at each period The forecast override is applied to each record's individual forecast at each period in the forecast. For example, the override might use the value -695 to adjust the forecast of the record SKU100 APAC for the Jan 2011 period, and the value -600 to adjust the forecast of the record SKU100 EMEA for the same period.
Promotions are applied after adjustment Any promotions or other adjustments used in a forecast are applied to the forecast after the Top‑down override is applied. This ensures each record forecast maintains its unique characteristics.
Currency is adjusted The currency unit used in the top-down override record is adjusted to the currency of each record before it is applied as an override.

You can also apply a top-down override to an individual record.

See Model Events.

Warning: When you apply a top-down override, the system inserts a fixed value in the override row in each of the dependent forecast items. If there was already an override in any of those cells, it is replaced.

When there are fixed overrides, the forecast no longer updates to reflect new historical data for those items that have been overwritten. You need a business process around clearing overrides at the beginning of each new forecast period so that forecasts can properly float.
